The Jawaharlal Nehru fellowship has been granted by the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund since 1968. The Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund formally came into being when a  National Committee consisting of 110 members was convened in New Delhi on 17 August 1964 under the Chairmanship of Dr S. Radhakrishnan, then President of India. The Committee unanimously adopted a Deed of Declaration of Trust and nominated the first Trustees, Holding Trustees and Members of the Executive Committee. In remembrance of the contribution of Jawaharlal Nehru, first prime minister of Independent India for 17 years, the fund was created with the aim of protecting and propagating the message of Jawaharlal Nehru. 

To commemorate his name, the Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund in 1968 instituted Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowships dedicated to the encouragement,support and patronage of higher learning and of free intellectual inquiry. These seek to provide an opportunity to exceptionally talented persons to devote themselves with freedom to their creative work for a period of two years. The fellowship is offered to individuals from all domains every year.

Stipend Awarded in Jawaharlal Nehru Fellowship 

Tenure : Two years. 

Monthly Stipend : Rs. 1,00,000/- (One Lakh Rupees) 

Additional expenses fund : Rs. 75,000/- per annum.

Applicants may send their particulars, under the following headings to Secretary, Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Fund, Teen Murti House, New Delhi 110 001.

  2. Experience in the field of specialization.
  3. Project proposed to be undertaken (A synopsis typed in double space in not more than a thousand words)
  4. A copy of a recent passport size photograph.
