Fully Funded AAUW International Fellowship for Women 2024

The AAUW International Fellowship is one of the leading opportunities for fully funded women’s graduate education. It began in 1888, a period when women were discouraged from pursuing an education. This American fellowship for women is AAUW’s largest fellowship program and the oldest non institutional source of graduate funding for women in the United States. This international fellowship is specifically designed for women who are non U.S. citizens or permanent residents, with a track record of academic excellence and empowering other women and girls.

Through funding overseas candidates who plan to pursue postgraduate studies in the United States with the goal of applying their knowledge, professional abilities, and leadership in the context of their home countries, AAUW’s overseas Fellowship Program advances education and equity for women. Furthermore, Graduate Women International members are eligible to receive up to six prizes to study abroad. The Program has been supporting international women pursuing full time postgraduate studies in the United States since 1917. 

Applicants must have earned the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree by the application deadline and must have applied to their proposed institutions of study by the time of the application. Recipients are selected for academic achievement and demonstrated commitment to women and girls. Recipients return to their home countries to become leaders in business, government, academia, community activism, and the arts or scientific fields. 

Financial Support Offered by the AAUW Fellowship 2024

AAUW offers substantial financial awards based on the academic level of the applicants. Here’s a breakdown of the fellowship amounts:

• Master’s/First Professional Degree: $20,000
• Doctoral Degree: $25,000
• Postdoctoral Research: $50,000

It’s important to note that fellowship funds are allocated to cover specific expenses, such as educational and living costs. However, the fellowship does not cover costs such as dependent child care, institutional overhead, or equipment purchases.

Criteria for selection for the AAUW International Fellowship 

• Applicants residing in their home country at the time of application, from developing/emerging countries, or from an underrepresented group in any region, will receive special consideration.
• Position on return to home country. 
• Academic and/or professional qualifications
• Demonstrated commitment to the advancement of women and girls in their home country. 
• Proposed time schedule. 
• Quality and feasibility of proposed plan of study or research. 
• Demonstrated evidence of prior community and/or civic service in the home country. 
• Applicant’s country’s need for specialized knowledge or skill. 
• Financial need. 
• Motivation for graduate study or research.

Required Documents for the AAUW International Fellowship 

To apply for the AAUW International Fellowship, applicants must provide specific documents to verify their eligibility and qualifications. Below is a structured guide outlining each category, the required documents, and relevant details.

1. Proof of Highest Degree

Required Documents:

• Transcripts from the college or university where the highest degree was obtained.
• Official letter from the institution where the degree was received, including the degree completion date.

Additional Details:

• Applicants must hold at least a bachelor’s degree.
• Transcripts must include a list of courses taken and grades received.
• The degree must be earned before the application deadline.

2. Proof of Current Enrollment (For Postdoctoral Applicants Only)

Required Documents:

• Transcripts or institution letters showing courses taken and grades received.
• Transcript showing the degree and date received.
• Official letter from the institution confirming degree and completion date.
• Copy of diploma showing degree and date received.

Additional Details:

• Applicable for currently enrolled applicants only.
• If fall 2023 grades are unavailable, provide a list of courses from the Registrar’s Office.
• The degree completion date must be included.

3. Proof of English Proficiency

Required Documents:

• Official report of acceptable and valid TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge assessment scores.
• Written statement verifying the applicant’s native language is English.
• Academic transcript or diploma confirming that the applicant’s secondary or undergraduate degree is from an English-speaking institution.
• Proof of one semester of full-time study in the applicant’s discipline at an English-speaking institution (between November 2021 and November 2023).
